Great atomsphere, great writing, lags a little in the middle
By BioLaie
Once upon a time a man called Robert E. Howard created a character called Conan and inspired a whole new genre of pulp fiction: Swords & Sorcery, stories were man have muscles with muscles and wear barely any clothes and women are all buxom and also wear barely anything. Goes without saying, that there is a lot of dubious morals and gore, too!

Following those trails was Karl Edward Wagner, a trained psychiatrist, trying to become a full-time writer. Largely forgotten by now he went on to become a very prolific editor of horror anthologies, intending to push and develop new talents. Sadly enough, because of his strong alcoholism he didn’t even reach the age of 50 and died roughly 20 years ago. His most famous creation is without a doubt Kane, the mystic swordsman.

There are just three novels about this character, although there are many short stories. You probably need to read all of them to fully understand this character. Kane is seemingly immortal and also completely amoral. He is not an anti-hero or a shades-of-grey character, no, this muscle-bound red-head is a full blown villain tend to conquer the world. An (more) evil version of Conan with more brains, to sum it up.

In this story he gains possession of a mysterious ring which proves to be part of a large ancient alien weapon, the Bloodstone. By using its power and pitting various human rulers against each other in the “Red Harvest” / “Fistful of Dollar” way Kane plans to gain ultimate power. But despite his brillance he is ignorant to a scary truth that concerns the true nature of the Bloodstone. This book is not entirely fantasy, it also contains some elements of science fiction, presenting the bloodstone not so much as a magical relic but a highly sophisticated machine created by an alien species.

Let’s say that this book starts really strong. The prose is truly great and above the typical S&S writer and compared to Howard there is a lot more of a horror-esque flair – no surprise, considering Wagner’s interest in that genre. Those descriptions of this ancient worlds are very atmospheric and create nice images in your head.

That is, until Kane reactivates the Bloodstone. Then the book becomes a lot slower, or at least it felt like that. There is also pages of dialogue which is just way too long. Too much clumsy exposition. There is also much talk about how “brillant” this Kane is – when in fact, the actions described in this story do not really feel like the work of a genius. But we are told so. Hmm. At least, Kane comes off as a cool dude (probably not so cool meeting him personally in the 21st century…) and makes you want to find out more about him – wanting to read the other stories. In general, the plot also suffers from too many coincidences and the characters who are not Kane”often seem not to be too smart, if you get what what I mean.

The twist is nice but not too surprising. It should be noted that later in the book, Kane stops being the protagonist and it shifts to the female warrior Teres who is pivotal in stopping Kane’s sinister plans. The final parts regain some of the strength of the early chapter and create a satisfying ending. Of course, Kane is a villain and so ultimately he must fail. This is not always easy to write; to make it feel convincing. Why should such a brilliant man fail? Wagner manages to solve this problem pretty well.

Talking about Teres: true to the cliche S&S tropes, she is technically portrayed as a ruthless warrior and a lesbian and threatened to be raped. At some point she falls for Kane but this is not one of those sleazy Bond-Pussygalore moments where the lesbian is “cured” by the sheer masculinity of our “hero”. In fact, it feels natural and she is still into girls after that point. She is a good character, at least for most of the book. In general, the misogyny is low in this book, the genre offers worse offenders. If anything, she is the most well-developed character in the book while all the others felt a little bit flat, with the exception of Kane.

The book is a good one, but not a true classic. Although it has that sort of potential. The mid-section should have been reworked but who knows how tight Wagner’s schedule was. Writers are rarely rich and often in need of money. On the other hand, for all its weaknesses this book would make a killer movie! Epic battles, scary toads, hot women and a straight-forward but interesting plot. Of course, having a protagonist who is the villain is a bold move, but on the other hand Hollywood would also have Teres, who is technically the hero of the book. Girl power, as modern day wants it. And compared to all those “badass girls” from modern movies she is actually believable and interesting. Think about it!

A true example of "No good deed goes unpunished."

Bloodstones fills every need that a sword and sorcery reader has. The character,Kane, is truely the hero or un-hero, your choice, that we all seek to follow. Sporting the triple "B's", Big, Brutal, and Brilliant he shows the reader survival and success techniques that apply even in today's market arena. I am constantly amazed at the intricate flow of intrigue Wagner created. I have read the book three times and then lost my copy. I am now on my own quest for the "bloodstone" and the power of it's story.

One of my favorites
By Jessica Niebylski
I came across this book at a used bookstore for $1 but I would gladly pay more for other Kane stories! Wagner created a dark and rather creepy setting for this novel that combines science fiction and sword and sorcery with even a bit of horror mixed with a dry humor. The characters are wonderfully drawn, from the enigmatic Kane to the tough Teres and the ambitious Dribeck and haughty Gerwein. Teres is probably the best female heroine I have come across in fantasy, she could kick Conan's butt easily. Kane is a very dark anti-hero, you're never quite sure WHAT his plans and ambitions are. This is a book I have read again and again and easily one of my favorites. Original, not predictable and suspenseful. Don't read after dark, especially the chapters that take place in the ruined city of Arellarti.
