Quick and simple philosophy basics

A basic introduction to philosophical issues with the standard approaches simply explained. It skims through standard arguments and counter arguments to philosophical problems, which can be good as a brief summary or as a starting point to delve deeper. Experienced philosophers will invariably consider some of the arguments to be poorly represented - which is only to be expected from philosophers.

Good balance between brevity and clarity

A really good introduction to the main areas of philosophical inquiry. The title is a bit of a misnomer, since it is not "jargon free", but it keeps the jargon to a minimum and explains concepts clearly. One of the aspects of the book that I appreciate the most is his excellent use of real-world analogies. You can tell that the author is an experienced teacher. This book is highly recommended as an introduction to philosophical thinking.

About the Author
James H. Myers, Ph.D. was professor of marketing at the Drucker School at Claremont Graduate University, for 22 years. Prior to that, he taught for 20 years at the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Southern California. Before entering academia, Myers was manager of the Management Research Division at the Prudential Insurance Company’s regional headquarters in Los Angeles. Myers is the author or coauthor of 7 books and more than 60 articles in the areas of marketing management, strategic marketing research, and customer satisfaction. He has also given many presentations on these and other topics to business and professional groups throughout the country. Myers has done extensive consulting in the areas of marketing research, market segmentation, product/service positioning, and new product opportunity identification. His clients have included Eastman Kodak, British Telecom, Frito-Lay, Gemini Management Consulting, and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

if you think that your dog is a real person then you will love the illustrations! Dogs have personalities and you will love these dogs. Both Ray Bradbury and Louise Max have captured the essence of dogs and their unique individual character!

Pleasant enough, I suppose

Let's get one thing straight: Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite writers. His novel _Something Wicked This Way Comes_ is one of my personal favorites. I have read Bradbury stories aloud to live audiences, and performed a couple of them from memory as well.
But Bradbury is not much of a poet. On the spectrum from Eliot and Stevens down to McKuen, he comes much closer to the latter. Bradbury writes rich, poetic prose which works as such most of the time, but his poems are rarely more than mildly interesting or pretty thought-rambles.
So it is with "Dogs Think That Every Day Is Christmas," a Hallmark-card-ish tribute to our lively four-footed friends. The illustrations by Louise Reinoehl Max are nice enough, but hardly inspired.
What makes this inexpensive bauble collectible for Bradbury completists (which includes me -- I ordered one from Amazon, after all), or perhaps for people who are VERY sentimental about canines, is the introduction, which includes a story about a boyhood trauma relating to a dog, and the lifelong effects.
I'm glad to have a copy to add to my collection, but I doubt I'll ever open it again.

Cute book

With Bradbury's recent passing, I somehow stumbled across the fact that he had written this book and bought a used copy -- it's out of print, used is all that one can find. It's mostly a children's picture book though the vocabulary would be kind of tough for a child to whom the illustrations would most appeal. So I guess it's an adult children's book! Hey, it's a ten-minute read, so how could one go far wrong! It's kind of an interesting bit of trivia regarding an author well known for his science fiction (futurism?), and an unexpected turn of his pen.

A complicated machine

“How (Research) Universities Work” is probably a more apt title. Although this book compares different types of universities, the focus is clearly on research universities.

There are many books about the inner workings of universities, but few are as readable as this tidy 200-page book. A nice airplane read rather than an exhaustive encyclopedia, it is peppered with opinions and vignettes. Some of the perspectives probably reflect Lombardi’s sudden exit from his university president appointments. He clearly doesn’t have much love for interminable committee discussions or governing boards.

Lombardi argues that research is the underlying context of a university, driving the quality of the institution, including the breadth and depth of undergraduate and graduate programs. Of course, teaching is also critical for a university, but he argues that skilled teachers are much more common than successful researchers. In addition, the best teachers only impact students who pass through their classes, while a productive researcher will have an international influence. This perspective leads to one of his vignettes describing his advice to a new assistant professor about achieving tenure: “…the reward for research is delayed until long after the work is done, while the feedback for teaching and service is now. Resist the reinforcement of super teaching and the siren song of community service; instead, do the research. No one believes in the promise of research, only in the demonstration of published results.”

Research universities are inherently highly competitive, continually vying for grants, the best students, and reputation. Thus, time is the enemy of success. “… every minute university people do not use to apply for a grant, recruit a student, improve the university, or do some other critical job, competitor institutions have the opportunity to move ahead.” To succeed in this highly competitive business, universities do not have to be visionary, but must be goal oriented and proactive. Despite the critical flaws of university rankings, the perception of the university affects its bottom line both directly and indirectly.

Despite the best strategy, it all gets down to money and people. The source of funding is precarious, there is never money enough to invest in all of the needed projects, and research is a money losing operation. Moreover, since all of the operations of a university rely on people, a university needs to invest in quality faculty and staff. Hence, much of the book is focused on how universities spend money, how to best track money, and how to set priorities for budgeting. Although there is considerable discussion of performance based investments, it would have been nice to have a few more details about the criteria that Lombardi thinks is most critical to set these priorities.

In short, this is an interesting, readable book that discusses nearly all aspects of the university, from the importance of people to governance, measuring quality to budgeting, supportive organizations to critics, and the delicate balance of immobility and change. You may not agree with all of his perspectives, but they will definitely make you think.

Well worth reading

How Universities Work is an eminently readable text. It would serve well as required reading for state legislators, governors, and university trustees. As stated, the book’s primary emphasis is directed at understanding the major research universities, but there is a wealth of understanding, by contrast, to be gained for people affiliated with other universities and colleges.

One of the most striking features of the book is Lombardi’s constant referral to faculty guilds. That is a deliberate, and most effective, means of communicating how faculty are shaped and how they think and how they interact with the research university.

If there is a weakness to the book, it is the very modest use of boldface or italics to highlight some very important passages in the text. The book is communicating a great deal of information, and some of it is actually wisdom. One can wish that italics might have been used to highlight the latter.

One reviewer referred to Lombardi’s examples in the following fashion: “Lombardi inserts fictional "dialogues" between various people to try to convey his points, but these generally come across as snarky and unenlightening.” Quite the contrary, these are neither snarky nor unenlightening. “Devastatingly accurate” is a more apt description of these dialogues.

One possibly surprising omission in the book is the topic of academic freedom as it relates to both faculty and students. If there is a second edition to the book, Lombardi might consider addressing this because it is certainly something widely misunderstood by various university constituencies.

The book is well worth reading.

Grade 4-6–Alex, his remarkable cat, and Yasmeen are back in their second romp that started with Who Is Stealing the 12 Days of Christmas? (Holiday House, 2003). While following Luau into the local graveyard, the two friends find a flyer from a boy in their school asking that his cat be returned. As they investigate, Alex's mom, a local police detective, finds that more and more felines are disappearing, and some witnesses think maybe a ghost is responsible. Legend has it that the Harvey house is haunted because of a murder in 1879. The story unfolds to a satisfying resolution to both mysteries. Characters are well drawn, and the book will entice even reluctant readers with its action and humor. Gr. 4-6. Eleven-year-old Alex and his next-door neighbor Yasmeen were first seen as sleuths in Who Is Stealing the 12 Days of Christmas (2003). Now, it's Halloween that goes missing--Halloween being a neighbor's cat. Freeman offers a solid mix of misunderstandings, mischief, and mystery as the kids track not only Halloween but also other cats that have been catnapped--some say by a ghost. Is their disappearance linked to two murders that happened in the town more than 100 years ago? A cat was at the center of that mystery, too. There's a lot of super sleuthing here; even Alex's cat, Luau, gets in on the action. By setting the story at Halloween, Freeman is able to use the high jinks of the holiday as the detecting goes on. The explanation of the mystery of the missing cats doesn't quite hold together; but the resolution of long-ago killings is quite gripping (in the name of decorum, the book calls the murdered woman's paramoursweetheart throughout). With kids always hungry for mysteries, this is a good one to have on the shelf. Ilene Cooper

Too twisted/gory for the elementary crowd

I picked this up at the library for a Halloween read aloud for my 1st grade daughter. I thought this might be a fun one to read during Halloween. Boy was I wrong. It sounded innocent enough...a cat named Halloween goes missing and two kids try to find him. Well in the end there is a capnapper stealing cats because she is shaving them and using the fur for over the counter homeopathic medicine for eye sight because (isn't it obvious?) cats have good eyesight. Talk about a FUR BALL! When they show up at the catnapper's home to catch her red-handed all of the cats are shaved bald wearing little rainbow sweaters. (Bizarre!) And on top of that at first the kids think the catnappings are related to an old neighborhood ghost tale (we don't find out about the details until we read the book). A woman has an affair. Her husband kills her. A few days later her husband's bloody dead body is found with the family cat sitting there licking its bloody paws. The cat did it as an act of revenge! Well not really. It was the husband who did it. He destroyed the boyfriend's body during the murder so badly that he wasn't identified correctly. The husband switched clothes with the dead body and burned the boyfriends clothes in the fireplace that has since been remodeled over. So the husband got away with two murders. Are you kidding me? An elementary grade mystery? UGH! We like mysteries and suspense (The 39 Clues, The Benedict Society, Sisters Grimm, The Magic Thief) but this was taking it a bit too far for an elementary read.

My review is that it was the best book I have read so far... it could have made a little more sense at the beginning. The characters were unique and full of personality. I loved it.
