Wild WIld West
By Jesse B Ellyson
Here you'll find tales of cattle and cowboys, gold and greed, rewards and revenge, and country as wide open and raw as the Arizona dessert or the great Rocky Mountains. In this collection of eight short stories the world's best selling writer of westerns takes the reader back to the raw boned times of leather, bullets, and ten gallon hats. It was a time when men were men and anything that moved was a target. It was a time when the law reigned supreme at least, that is, till it got in the way of the business at hand. It was a time when good ranch land was as valuable as gold and equally fought over. It was the time of the cowboy.

As fans all around the world already know, Louis L'Amour brings these rough times to life with his stories. No one spins a tale quite like he does. The eight stories here are prime examples of L'Amour at his best. Between each story L'Amour has included historical notes which, while not exactly related to the stories in any particular way, help to bring a deeper sense of reality to the anthology.

Buckskin Run is a fantastic collection of gritty western yarns and it's a great action packed read from the first page to the last.

Tales From The Trail
By Bill Slocum
"Buckskin Run" is a collection of Louis L'Amour short stories written for Western pulp magazines in the years just before his star rose with the publication of "Hondo." It's a samey collection of yarns featuring mysterious solitary cowboys who wander into unknown places full of whispers and true-hearted women; entertaining enough when not read all at once.

"The Ghosts Of Buckskin Run" is the first and longest tale, of one Rod Morgan who finds himself occupying a spot of land believed by some to be haunted and by others to hold $120,000 in gold. Of all the stories, it seems the most likely candidate for a novel, having some engaging characters, complex villains, and a love story that isn't automatic, but like most of the other stories, it feels too rushed, as if L'Amour knows his readers showed up for a gunfight and feels under an obligation to provide.

Other tales feature a cowboy who gets ambushed ("dry-gulched") while bringing calico for his girl and a group of gold prospectors who have to fight off Indians and discover there is a traitor in their midst. Designing women are at work in two stories, neither of which sticks out as anything special.

Though he did better with the space and room of a novel, L'Amour was an avid short story writer, and there are three stories here that show he had the touch for it:

"Jackson Of Horntown" is a nice character piece featuring the last surviving member of a gang of outlaws, an aging lawmen sent to arrest him, and a neglected burro which brings them together. Among other things, it is a nice display of L'Amour's nature-writing, as the two men and the old burro wander through a cruel blizzard.

"Squatters Of The Lonetree" is a morality play about a rancher who doesn't want to share his land with a hog farmer but can't quite get him to skedaddle. It's an entertaining story with more than a little humor in depicting the rancher's continued frustration and no real bad guys, and definitely shows L'Amour capable of stretching within his Western-writing framework.

Finally, there's "Down The Pogonip Trail," the best in the book. A struggling cowboy sets on getting a wanted man for the reward money, only the wanted man gets him first, and in the process makes him question his priorities. When is money worth taking a man's life, even one who just stole your provisions? L'Amour's good-hearted tale ends on a nicely ambiguous note, one that lingers.

Not much else here does linger, especially small historical notes about unrelated matters L'Amour inserted between the tales when the collection was published in 1981. This is L'Amour for people after a quick fix. Long on action, short on story, "Buckskin Run" feels more like a sprint.

Nice western stories
By Latour07
This succession of short stories adds even more pepper to these adventures typical western. Louis L'Amour is a great storyteller, adventurer, boxer, former tankiste during the Second World War, which ended his life owner of a ranch. It embodies perfectly alive the myth of the "frontier".

The Filter Bubble: How the New Personalized Web Is Changing What We Read and How We Think, by Eli Pariser

In December 2009, Google began customizing its search results for all users, and we entered a new era of personalization. With little notice or fanfare, our online experience is changing, as the websites we visit are increasingly tailoring themselves to us. In this engaging and visionary book, MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser lays bare the personalization that is already taking place on every major website, from Facebook to AOL to ABC News. As Pariser reveals, this new trend is nothing short of an invisible revolution in how we consume information, one that will shape how we learn, what we know, and even how our democracy works.

The race to collect as much personal data about us as possible, and to tailor our online experience accordingly, is now the defining battle for today’s internet giants like Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft. Behind the scenes, a burgeoning industry of data companies is tracking our personal information to sell to advertisers, from our political leanings to the hiking boots we just browsed on Zappos.

As a result, we will increasingly each live in our own, unique information universe—what Pariser calls “the filter bubble.” We will receive mainly news that is pleasant, familiar and confirms our beliefs—and since these filters are invisible, we won’t know what is being hidden from us. Our past interests will determine what we are exposed to in the future, leaving less room for the unexpected encounters that spark creativity, innovation and the democratic exchange of ideas.

Drawing on interviews with both cyber-skeptics and cyber-optimists, from the co-founder of OK Cupid, an algorithmically-driven dating website, to one of the chief visionaries of U.S. information warfare, THE FILTER BUBBLE  tells the story of how the Internet, a medium built around the open flow of ideas, is closing in on itself under the pressure of commerce and “monetization.” It peeks behind the curtain at the server farms, algorithms, and geeky entrepreneurs that have given us this new reality, and investigates the consequences of corporate power in the digital age.

THE FILTER BUBBLE reveals how personalization could undermine the internet’s original purpose as an open platform for the spread of ideas, and leave us all in an isolated, echoing world. But it is not too late to change course. Pariser lays out a new vision for the web, one that embraces the benefits of technology without turning a blind eye to its negative consequences, and will ensure that the Internet lives up to its transformative promise.

Amazon.com Review
Author Q&A with Eli Pariser

Q: What is a “Filter Bubble”?

A: We’re used to thinking of the Internet like an enormous library, with services like Google providing a universal map. But that’s no longer really the case. Sites from Google and Facebook to Yahoo News and the New York Times are now increasingly personalized – based on your web history, they filter information to show you the stuff they think you want to see. That can be very different from what everyone else sees – or from what we need to see.

Your filter bubble is this unique, personal universe of information created just for you by this array of personalizing filters. It’s invisible and it’s becoming more and more difficult to escape.

Q: I like the idea that websites might show me information relevant to my interests—it can be overwhelming how much information is available I already only watch TV shows and listen to radio programs that are known to have my same political leaning. What’s so bad about this?

A: It’s true: We’ve always selected information sources that accord with our own views. But one of the creepy things about the filter bubble is that we’re not really doing the selecting. When you turn on Fox News or MSNBC, you have a sense of what their editorial sensibility is: Fox isn’t going to show many stories that portray Obama in a good light, and MSNBC isn’t going to the ones that portray him badly. Personalized filters are a different story: You don’t know who they think you are or on what basis they’re showing you what they’re showing. And as a result, you don’t really have any sense of what’s getting edited out – or, in fact, that things are being edited out at all.

Q: How does money fit into this picture?

A: The rush to build the filter bubble is absolutely driven by commercial interests. It’s becoming clearer and clearer that if you want to have lots of people use your website, you need to provide them with personally relevant information, and if you want to make the most money on ads, you need to provide them with relevant ads. This has triggered a personal information gold rush, in which the major companies – Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, and the like – are competing to create the most comprehensive portrait of each of us to drive personalized products. There’s also a whole “behavior market” opening up in which every action you take online – every mouse click, every form entry – can be sold as a commodity.

Q: What is the Internet hiding from me?

A: As Google engineer Jonathan McPhie explained to me, it’s different for every person – and in fact, even Google doesn’t totally know how it plays out on an individual level. At an aggregate level, they can see that people are clicking more. But they can’t predict how each individual’s information environment is altered.

In general, the things that are most likely to get edited out are the things you’re least likely to click on. Sometimes, this can be a real service – if you never read articles about sports, why should a newspaper put a football story on your front page? But apply the same logic to, say, stories about foreign policy, and a problem starts to emerge. Some things, like homelessness or genocide, aren’t highly clickable but are highly important.

Q: Which companies or Websites are personalizing like this?

A: In one form or another, nearly every major website on the Internet is flirting with personalization. But the one that surprises people most is Google. If you and I Google the same thing at the same time, we may get very different results. Google tracks hundreds of “signals” about each of us – what kind of computer we’re on, what we’ve searched for in the past, even how long it takes us to decide what to click on – and uses it to customize our results. When the result is that our favorite pizza parlor shows up first when we Google pizza, it’s useful. But when the result is that we only see the information that is aligned with our religious or social or political beliefs, it’s difficult to maintain perspective.

Q: Are any sites being transparent about their personalization?

A: Some sites do better than others. Amazon, for example, is often quite transparent about the personalization it does: “We’re showing you Brave New World because you bought 1984.” But it’s one thing to personalize products and another to personalize whole information flows, like Google and Facebook are doing. And very few users of those services are even marginally aware that this kind of filtering is at work.

Q: Does this issue of personalization impact my privacy or jeopardize my identity at all?

A: Research psychologists have known for a while that the media you consume shapes your identity. So when the media you consume is also shaped by your identity, you can slip into a weird feedback loop. A lot of people see a simple version of this on Facebook: You idly click on an old classmate, Facebook reads that as a friendship, and pretty soon you’re seeing every one of John or Sue’s posts.

Gone awry, personalization can create compulsive media – media targeted to appeal to your personal psychological weak spots. You can find yourself eating the equivalent of information junk food instead of having a more balanced information diet.

Q: You make it clear that while most Websites’ user agreements say they won’t share our personal information, they also maintain the right to change the rules at any time. Do you foresee sites changing those rules to profit from our online personas?

A: They already have. Facebook, for example, is notorious for its bait-and-switch tactics when it comes to privacy. For a long time, what you “Liked” on Facebook was private, and the site promised to keep it that way. Then, overnight, they made that information public to the world, in order to make it easier for their advertisers to target specific subgroups.

There’s an irony in the fact that while Rolex needs to get Tom Cruise’s permission to put his face on a billboard, it doesn’t need to get my permission to advertise my endorsement to my friends on Facebook. We need laws that give people more rights in their personal data.

Q: Is there any way to avoid this personalization? What if I’m not logged into a site?

A: Even if you’re not logged into Google, for example, an engineer told me there are 57 signals that the site uses to figure out who you are: whether you’re on a Mac or PC or iPad, where you’re located when you’re Googling, etc. And in the near future, it’ll be possible to “fingerprint” unique devices, so that sites can tell which individual computer you’re using. That’s why erasing your browser cookies is at best a partial solution—it only partially limits the information available to personalizers.

What we really need is for the companies that power the filter bubble to take responsibility for the immense power they now have – the power to determine what we see and don’t see, what we know and don’t know. We need them to make sure we continue to have access to public discourse and a view of the common good. A world based solely on things we “Like” is a very incomplete world.

I’m optimistic that they can. It’s worth remembering that newspapers weren’t always informed by a sense of journalistic ethics. They existed for centuries without it. It was only when critics like Walter Lippman began to point out how important they were that the newspapers began to change. And while journalistic ethics aren’t perfect, because of them we have been better informed over the last century. We need algorithmic ethics to guide us through the next.

Q: What are the business leaders at Google and Facebook and Yahoo saying about their responsibilities?

A: To be honest, they’re frustratingly coy. They tend to frame the trend in the passive tense: Google’s Eric Schmidt recently said “It will be very hard for people to watch or consume something that has not in some sense been tailored for them,” rather than “Google is making it very hard…” Mark Zuckerberg perfectly summed up the tension in personalization when he said “A squirrel dying in your front yard may be more relevant to your interests right now than people dying in Africa.” But he refuses to engage with what that means at a societal level – especially for the people in Africa.

Q: Your background is as a political organizer for the liberal Website MoveOn.org. How does that experience inform your book?

A: I’ve always believed the Internet could connect us all together and help create a better, more democratic world. That’s what excited me about MoveOn – here we were, connecting people directly with each other and with political leaders to create change.

But that more democratic society has yet to emerge, and I think it’s partly because while the Internet is very good at helping groups of people with like interests band together (like MoveOn), it’s not so hot at introducing people to different people and ideas. Democracy requires discourse and personalization is making that more and more elusive.

And that worries me, because we really need the Internet to live up to that connective promise. We need it to help us solve global problems like climate change, terrorism, or natural resource management which by their nature require massive coordination, and great wisdom and ingenuity. These problems can’t be solved by a person or two – they require whole societies to participate. And that just won’t happen if we’re all isolated in a web of one.

A jewel of a book!
By Charlotte Mabry
This is a fabulous book. I use it with my clients and have of course done the work myself. I am so glad it has been reprinted. Thom Rutledge's book/workbook can be used alone or in conjunction with a therapy practice. Serious work with lots of good writing to "lighten it up."

This is such a valuable book for individuals and therapists. As a psychologist, I have read and used any books on self-healing, shame and self-compassion and this is by far the most practical and most helpful.

A very helpful resource!
By Char Hutchinson (balancED Support Group for Women with Eating Disorders)
First off I want to say that anything Thom writes is worth it's weight in gold. I work in the area of eating disorders and recommend all of Thoms books to my clients. He knows what he is talking about. The name Thom Rutledge is synonymous with recovery from any addiction whether it be codependency, eating disorders, substance use etc. This handbook is so very helpful and allows the reader to work at their own pace. I hear from women all the time about how much they gained from not only reading this book but by working through it applying the tools to their lives. Thank you Thom!

William James on Education
By Robin Friedman
Beginning in 1891, William James gave frequent lectures to teachers in which he explained the psychology he had developed in his "Principles of Psychology" and offered suggestions on applying the science of psychology to the art of education. Similarly, beginning in 1895, James delivered a series of lectures to college students -- generally at schools for women -- on education and its purposes. In 1899, James gathered both sets of lectures together and published them as "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals." The book was read widely and became financially successful for James.

In his illuminating recent biography of James, "William James in the Maelstrom of American Modernism", Robert Richardson describes the "Talks" as a whole as "written in what we may call William James's third style." He explains: "The third style is his plainest, clearest, most public style. It is at once vivid, personal, comprehensible, and without a shred of condescension. It is best exemplified in 'Talks to Teachers'. The longer James worked over a subject, the simpler and shorter and more direct he made it". (p. 360)

The two sets of lectures are complementary with the first set explaining to teachers how psychology could be of use in the educational process while the second set explains to the students the value of the educational opportunities presented to them. The "Talks to Teachers" begins with what many people at the time saw as a mechanistic psychology rooted in physiology and developed in light of Darwin's theory of evolution. In many places, James encourages teachers to see a pupil in part as "a subtle little piece of of machinery." An effective means of education endeavors to work with rather than against the nervous system. In successive short chapters, James discusses his fundamental theory of the "stream of consciousness" and applies it to learned behavior through exploration of reactions, habits, association, attention and memory. The lectures are lucid and clear and show both flexibility and wisdom in considering the process of education.

James's focus throughout is on education as an activity fitting the student for the conduct of life in a wide variety of situations rather than as means of learning intellectual abstractions. James stresses the importance of the body and of physical activity in the learning process. His psychology begins with science and mechanism but it does not end there. I would like to point out two of what I found to be among the insightful observations of the "Talks to Teachers." First, in the chapter on "Memory", James points out that the psychological abilities of the mind must be taken together in an individual and that a person need not be "cast down" by deficiencies in any single element. James stresses passion and desire as critical in overcoming any mechanical difficulties. He writes: "You can be an artist without visual images, a reader without eyes, a mass of erudition with a bad elementary memory. In almost any subject your passion for the subject will save you. If you only care enough for a result you will almost certainly attain it."

The other passage in the "Talks to Teachers" I wish to single out is in the concluding chapter on "The Will". Here James allows Spinoza to have the last word. James points out that there are two ways in which people can make choices: by saying "no" to something or by saying "yes" to its contrary. James opts for the latter approach. James writes: "Spinoza long ago wrote in his Ethics that anything that a man can avoid under the notion that it is bad he may also avoid under the notion that something else is good. He who habitually acts sub specie mali, under the negative notion, the notion of the bad, is called a slave by Spinoza. To him who acts habitually under the notion of good he gives the name of freeman. See to it now, I beg you, that you make freement of your pupils by habituating them to act, whenever possible, under the notion of a good". This is wise advice, from both Spinoza and William James.

The second part of the book consists of three wonderful addresses to students: "The Gospel of Relaxation", the seminal essay "On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings" and its companion essay "What Makes a Life Significant." The first essay is a still timely corrective to the tendency of many Americans to stress and to wrongly-directed effort. But second and third of these essays are critical to James's work in its entirety. The "blindness" to which James refers is the difficulty every person has in knowing the mind of another and in properly and sympathetically valuing what the other person finds important and significant in life. As James states in his Preface to "Talks to Teachers": "The facts and worths of life need many cognizers to take them in. There is no point of view absolutely public and universal." James develops this theme through the use of literary examples drawn from Robert Louis Stevenson, Whitman, Tolstoy, and many other writers.

In the Preface to the "Talks to Teachers and Students" James also underscores the importance of the essay "On a Certain Blindness". This essay is James's most direct statement of the value of pluralism, individualism, and democracy. He writes: "The practical consequence of such a philosophy is the well-known democratic respect for the sacredness of individuality -- is, at any rate, the outward tolerance of whatever is not itself intolerant. ... Religiously and philosophically, our ancient national doctrine of live and let live may prove to have a far deeper meaning than our people now seem to imagine it it to possess."

This short and beautifully written collection of essays is an excellent non-technical introduction to the thought of William James.

Timeless insight
By Tatiana
James provides insightful understanding into both the science and art of teaching (which he differentiates). Great for those working in education who wish to reflect on the core values of relationships formed between teacher and student as well as the essential strategies needed to empower students to develop independent learning skills. In a fast changing world submerged in IT it's valuable to reflect on the basic principles and how these can still be implemented in the learning environment today.

A classic that every teacher and student should read
By Enajazile
The most widely read text in schools of education in the first third of the 20thC, William James's insights about teaching and learning from over 100 years ago are still timely and relevant, and many of his proposals are now being confirmed by cognitive science.

Lobotomy: Surviving the Ramones, by Dee Dee Ramone, Veronica Kofman

Lobotomy is a lurid and unlikely temperance tract from the underbelly of rock 'n' roll. Taking readers on a wild rollercoaster ride from his crazy childhood in Berlin and Munich to his lonely methadone-soaked stay at a cheap hotel in Earl's Court and newfound peace on the straight and narrow, Dee Dee Ramone catapults readers into the raw world of sex, addiction, and two-minute songs. It isn't pretty. With the velocity of a Ramones song, Lobotomy rockets from nights at CBGB's to the breakup of the Ramones' happy family with an unrelenting backbeat of hate and squalor: his girlfriend ODs; drug buddy Johnny Thunders steals his ode to heroin, "Chinese Rock"; Sid Vicious shoots up using toilet water; and a pistol-wielding Phil Spector holds the band hostage in Beverly Hills. Hey! Ho! Let's go!

The Irony, of Course, is What Makes This So Sad
By Richard D. Gershberg
First of all, don't read this if you're looking for literature.

Second, don't read this if you're looking for gossip about the band.

Finally, do read this if you want insight into a very sad story about an enormous talent who suffered from completely unwarranted low self esteem, and the addictions he used as a coping mechanism. Dee Dee Ramone was the poet of a generation.

The saddest part of this story, of course, is that Dee Dee did not survive the Ramones; he was dead 5 years after the first edition of this book was published.

Slip into the shoes of Dee Dee Ramone
By Donald A. Prentiss
I liked the book for it was - an honest and straight from the horses mouth telling of how it was being Dee Dee Ramone. You get a great sense of who he is and how he works, he holds nothing back in regards to the things he's done in his life that he is not proud of. The book's got a ton of personality behind it and it reads as if Dee Dee is talking right to you directly. What I didn't like was that there were very few stories regarding THE RAMONES themselves. I know, then don't read a Dee Dee book, read a RAMONES tell all! But the book lost points for lacking more and by more - most of the book is just Dee Dee talking about running around for drugs and feeling bad for himself. I loved the honesty, just hungered for more. Still a needed read for a Ramones fan.

sincere and confessional
By Jizo43
This book was surprisingly good. Dee Dee's sincerity and honesty really showed through this confessional autobiography. The book is filled with Dee Dee's insight about his journey from a highly dysfunctional family to being a successful song writer and punk star. It made me realize how much he contributed to the band and even during the times he was out of the band he was still writing songs for the Ramones on a freelance basis. What impresses me about Dee Dee is that his main goal was happiness and he was well aware of his struggle, his own ghosts and faults. This book also is simply enjoyable to read. Dee Dee is a great writer with tight chapters that wrap up nicely. I really love this book and will definitely reread it a couple more times.

Igor Stravinsky--The Composer in the Recording Studio: A Comprehensive Discography (Discographies: Association for Recorded Sound Collectio

Stuart offers the most thorough discography of the works and recordings of Igor Stravinsky to date as well as a chronicle of the composer's recording career. As the first discography to list all of Stravinsky's recorded compositions, including concert and broadcast performances, both pre- and post-World War II, as well as all LP issues, this volume displays the wide range of Stravinsky's talent. The significance of Robert Craft's contribution to the continued exposure of Stravinsky's works after 1948 is well documented, as are the piano performances recorded by Stravinsky's son.

A lengthy introductory essay traces Stravinsky's recording history from his early use of the pianola through the advent of more sophisticated musical technology which enabled the composer to become the composer-performer. The discography itself lists 191 studio performances, catalogs recorded issues, and details unpublished recordings. The chronological index of Stravinsky's compositions which follows is cross-referenced to the recordings already cited, thereby showing each recording relative to the date of the work's composition. This extensive listing of recordings, combined with the narrative account of Stravinsky's recording history provides the collector with a valuable updated guide to almost all of the composer's works.

Review
"This annotated discography of Stravinsky's recordings (and recording history) is the culmination of the work of previous compilers including David Hamilton, whose 1968 discography was reprinted in Benjamin Boretz's compilation Perspectives on Schoenberg and Stravinsky (rev. ed., 1972; 1st ed., CH, Jun'69); Ulf Scharlau (Igor Strawinsky, 1882-1971: Phonographie, Frankfurt am Main, 1972); Eric Walter White (Stravinsky: The Composer and His Works, 1979); and others. Stuart attempts to list all of Stravinsky's studio performances (except those given primarily for the camera) together with recordings of concerts and broadcasts that have been published on disc or preserved in archive collections. In addition to the discography listing, Stuart includes five brief, fascinating essays that provide a history of Stravinsky's recording: "Uncertain Beginnings 1923-27," "The Old World 1928-38," "The New World 1940-50," "Consolidation 1951-57," and "One More Time 1957-67." The discography is chronologically arranged and includes all of the known studio recordings (153 entries), all of Robert Craft's studio recordings of music by Stravinsky (29 entries), and some assorted recordings without a conductor (9 entries), making a total of 191. (Also included are three examples of Stravinsky's discussions concerning recording.) ?This annotated discography of Stravinsky's recordings (and recording history) is the culmination of the work of previous compilers including David Hamilton, whose 1968 discography was reprinted in Benjamin Boretz's compilation Perspectives on Schoenberg and Stravinsky (rev. ed., 1972; 1st ed., CH, Jun'69); Ulf Scharlau (Igor Strawinsky, 1882-1971: Phonographie, Frankfurt am Main, 1972); Eric Walter White (Stravinsky: The Composer and His Works, 1979); and others. (Also included are three examples of Stravinsky's discussions concerning recording.) Appendixes include a list of the CBS LPs, Soulima Stravinsky's recordings, the live recordings, and the missing works. Recommended for extensive music collections and for small libraries wishing a separate, single-volume discography on the recorded works of Stravinsky.?-Choice

Exhaustive and essential
By Gil Lamont
Stuart's exhaustive discography is essential for any Stravinsky collector eager to track down the recordings, whether on vinyl or reissued on CD. Comprehensive session notes help untangle the confusion of when, where, and who, and the Introduction offers an excellent picture of Stravinsky's ongoing conflict with the recording process. Pricey but well worth it.

doormat heroine tries to move on
By RomReader
25y.o baker reluctantly agrees to 30y.o coffee mogul Hero's scheme to be his pretend lover at his honeymoon destination in Thailand, since his bride just jilted him at the altar. He wants to secure an important coffee-supply deal in Thailand from a traditionalist supplier and heroine wants to do this for him as her last favor to him before she leaves his company. She finally realized that he'll never see her as more than a friend and employee and decides to move on. Hero doesn't take her potential leaving well. And their forced closeness in Thailand tempts them into making it real. The consequences, however, were harder to manage. What does heroine end up doing? How does Hero keep her from leaving?

My 1st Yates book and I liked it. The writing flowed well and had a mix of humor, angst, and psychological depth. I liked seeing the progression of heroine's change from being a passive doormat to a struggling but more assertive individual. Her inner struggles had a realistic feel to them and I liked that she didn't completely change in the book. It made her maturity more believable and relatable. I also liked how the changes she made sparked changes in Hero too. Hero had some major issues that made him blind to heroine and made him be emotionally clueless and unfeeling at times.** We saw him struggle as well and watched how his past begins to get patched up in the present. And it was mostly due to heroine's effect in his life and how much he realized she meant to him.

Highly recommended.

Chicano Folklore: A Guide to the Folktales, Traditions, Rituals and Religious Practices of Mexican Americans, by Rafaela G. Castro

Did you know that barrio is a term for a Chicano neighborhood, and that some of the oldest barrios can be found in major U.S. cities, like Los Angeles, Chicago, El Paso, and San Antonio? Or that menudo is actually a soup-type dish made with tripe, the stomach lining of a cow, and typically eaten early in the morning after big holiday celebrations to cure a hangover?
Chicano Folklore is replete with such interesting and often surprising facts about Mexican American culture. Even before the United States-Mexican War in 1848, when 80,000 Spanish-Mexican-Indian people suddenly became inhabitants of the United States, people of Spanish and Mexican descent had a rich and unique culture in what is now the American southwest. Understanding Chicano folklore, or the customs, rituals, and traditional cultural forms that Mexican Americans share, is extremely significant to comprehending the Chicano experience. Chicano Folklore is the first reference book to focus wholly on this subject. From burrito (literally little burro or little donkey) to zoot suit (a style of suit worn by Mexican Americans, African Americans, and Filipino Americans during the 1930s and 1940s), the dictionary's more than 225 in-depth passages thoroughly explain the meaning and background of each cultural term. We learn about the music, religious practices, food, and key historical and mythical figures that make Chicano folklore so vibrant.
The detailed, immensely informative passages of Chicano Folklore will entertain and educate anyone interested in understanding Chicano culture and the colorful impact it has had on America as a whole.

From Library Journal
This inclusive lexicon offers terms associated with the Chicano population and its history, experiences, and customs, though the focus is on Mexican Americans who came of age in the 1960s in the Southwest. The entries, which combine English and Spanish terminology, include definitions, commentary, and citations to Chicano folk narratives, arts, folk drama, and popular culture as well as the broad cultural studies already available. These entries give context to expressive behaviors and artifacts (urban tales, dance steps, joke cycles, dress fads, folk remedies, spiritual beliefs, holidays, foods, etc.) as well as words that have been absorbed into everyday English (burrito, coyote, frijoles, tamales, Los Lobos, etc.). Castro, a librarian at the University of Oregon, derived her material from scholarly studies authored principally by Chicanos and recognized scholars, including such notables as Mark Glazer, Aurelio Espinoza Jr., and Americo Paredes. This work complements such reliable sources as Michael Heisley's An Annotated Bibliography of Chicano Folklore from the Southwestern United States (1977) and Olga Najera-Ramirez's Greater Mexican Folklore in the United States: An Annotated Bibliography (1987), both older books. This excellent volume will find an audience with folklorists, scholars, regionalists, and library researchers and will likely become indispensable for both educators and students.DR.K. Burns, Hatboro, PA

From Booklist
For the student, teacher, librarian, historian, storyteller, or researcher seeking details about Latino lore, this book provides 228 alphabetically arranged entries on literature, drama, media, art, society, religion, medicine, and history. Coverage includes the most common topics--"La Bamba," Cinco de Mayo, Quetzalcoatl, Tejanos, Tinwork--alongside less common terms, such as Curanderismo (healing), Palomilla (group of friends), Sobador (masseuse), and an entry for Teresa Urrea, a psychic and healer. A five-page introduction differentiates between Chicanos and Mexicanos and clears up misconceptions that folk culture is solely the province of the primitive peasant.

The text appears in clear fonts that pair roman with italic type for frequent citations and terms in Spanish, which Castro translates. She offers no pronunciation guides, which would benefit an English-speaking audience. Page layout is pleasant and easy on the eye. Cross-referencing and end-of-entry sources are balanced and proportional. Illustration is adequate, including black-and-white photographs and drawings as well as a spectacular, crayon-bright cover featuring a painting of a present-day couple contemplating La Virgen de Guadalupe.

Castro lacks the succinctness and punch of an experienced writer. Her diction and rhetoric are muddled; paragraphs are overlong. However, she makes up for rhetorical faults with an enthusiasm and expertise in a wide range of examples, language quirks, and data that appear to spring from extensive reading in primary sources. In entries such as La Leyenda Negra and La Llorona, she is particularly adept at dispelling false or overly hasty assumptions about Chicano culture. The 56 pages of back matter offer an impressive bibliography and meticulous indexing. The lack of Internet sites is a puzzling omission.

Overall, this useful dictionary presents basic concepts in an attractive, reasonably priced compendium. Its appearance at this peak moment in multicultural education should please purchasers seeking timely, informative reference materials that suit the needs of the general reader and student as well as the expert. The dictionary should satisfy the most discriminating researcher and find a place on shelves of public, school, and university libraries as well as in the collections of purveyors and performers of world and Chicano folklore. A wealth of information
By Enrique Torres
In this politically charged pc world, fueld by fear of illegal immigration from south of the border(meanwhile the terrorsits are probably crossing the porous northern border) the term Chicano is sure to have it's detrators. Fear not, as this book has more to do with essence or embodiment of having Mexican roots and what it entails to be an American of Mexican descent. It is educational. The book deals with the traditions, rituals and religious practises from a historical and contemporary perspective. For example, a non-political and harmless (except for maybe gas) topic like frijoles(beans)is extensively covered from it's historical origins and uses to it's use(beaner) as a derogatory term. This book is an educational tool regardless of your political leanings or beliefs. It seems everyone can learn a little something from this cultural dictionary. Many of the topics can be further explored in music or books like Art and Faith in Mexico: The Nineteenth-Century Retablo Tradition which details the retablos or religious paintings in Mexico or Puro Party which is a band started by a professor of anthropology at San Francisco whose name is Dr. Jose Cuellar. The band, Doctor Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band, is made up of musicians who have degrees from prestigious universities who incorporate a variety of Mexican styles into their music. If you are interested in a topic there is probably a book written on the subject somewhere, likewise if you'd like to explore a musical style menioned in the book the various genres are full of talent. This is a very cool(chido) book that explains some of the makeup of what it is to be a Chicano or Mexican-American in these here United States; for that matter, what it is to be an American of Mexicna heritage too. I would recommend this book for a better cultural understanding for all people living in the United States. Recommended for high school school libraries, community centers and public libraries or your own personal reference library.

A valuable storehouse of Mexican-American heritage
By M. G. SFAELLOU
The word 'Chicano' is used for an American of Mexican extraction, particularly one living in border areas of New Mexico etc. The word 'Chicano' denotes someone who, despite living in U.S.A. is pure Mexican (and thus is not to be confused with a 'pocho', a term which Chicanos apply to one of their own people who has become too Americanised or 'agringado' (i.e. like a 'gringo' or 'gavacho' - as the American is sometimes called). The chicanos have an extremely rich culture and this excellent reference work is a great tribute to that culture written by an expert. This dictionary is supplemented with a forty page bibliography as well as an index. The entries range from the 'abuelo' (literally 'grandfather' but the term is also used as a synonym with 'coco' which is a kind of bogeyman) to 'Zozobra' (a giant effigy which is burnt). By coincidence the last entry has an indirect relation to the first entry since there is a cross reference to the 'kookooee' which is another form of this effigy (burnt in Santa Fe) and the name of which is derived from the 'cucui' or 'coco' (which , as we have just mentioned, are synonymous with the 'abuelo'). In fact, talkng of the burning of effigies, I also read on p. 222 that at Easter (as in Mexico - and indeed even in many parts of Greece) a life-size effigy of Judas is burnt.
The author is careful to provide the correct Chicano Spanish term for all the traditions and customs mentioned. The work covers all aspects of folklore. There are rites of passage: baptism customs and rituals (found in the entry on the 'comadre'/'compadre'), the 'quinceanera'( - spelt with a tilde on the 'n' - this refers to a girl's fifteenth birthday celebration), wedding customs and death customs (e.g. in the entries 'camposanto' or cemetery, 'calavera' or skeleton, the 'Dia de la Muerte' or Day of the Dead and 'la carreta de la muerte' or death cart). There are also entries which feature mythological creatures in folk tales like the 'chanes' or water spirits, the 'duendes' or goblins (distinct from the 'pichilingis' or elves) and the 'chirrionera' or mythical snake.
There are many entries which pertain to 'fiestas' and calendar customs. For instance, in connection with the Christmas season there are entries on 'aguinaldos' or carols, 'farolitos' or lanterns, 'matachines','oremos' and the 'pinata'(spelt with a tilde - the clay pot that children break to get the presents and sweets/candies inside). There are also legends such as 'La Llorona' and even some Aztec myths like Aztlan, Quetzalcoatl and Tanantzin etc. The dictionary also contains a few short biographies of notable persons such as La Adelita (feminist symbol) and the pioneering folklorist Fabiola Cabeza de Baca.
Food is also represented with entries like the 'burritos'(little donkeys) and 'capirotada', etc. There is a reference to 'curanderismo' or folk healing as well as to the 'huesero' ot bone-setter. Similarly, some words deal with magic and superstition such as 'brujeria' or witchcraft and the 'mal ojo' or evil eye. The reader can also find entries on chicano folk art such as the 'colcha' or blanket and the 'retablos' or religious paintings. Musical entries are also provided (e.g. the 'conjunto' groups and the 'mariachi' bands). Unique literary terms are also included like 'adivinanzas' or riddles, 'decimas' or poetic narratives and one can also find terms that relate to political and social aspects of chicano culture. For instance, there is mention of the 'rascuache' or downtrodden folk, the 'pachucos' (urban youth of the 1940s) and even the 'alambrista' or illegal border-crosser.
There are so many other fascinating entries which cannot all be mentioned here. This is an important work and an invaluable record of the Chicanos' cultural wealth. It is an essential reference tool for Mexicans on both sides of the border and for general readers who enjoy reading comparative folklore.
N.B. THIS BOOK (ENTITLED 'DICTIONARY OF CHICANO FOLKLORE')IS EXACTLY THE SAME BOOK AS ANOTHER ENTITLED 'CHICANO FOLKLORE: GUIDE TO TRADITIONS, RITUALS AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES OF MEXICAN AMERICANS' (BY A DIFFERENT PUBLISHING HOUSE). THE FORMER IS THE ORIGINAL HARDBACK EDITION AND THE EXTRA PAGES (333 AS OPPOSED TO 308) IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT IS ILLUSTRATED WITH DOZENS OF BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS. THE LATTER TITLE IS SIMPLY A MUCH MORE ECONOMICAL PAPERBACK VERSION OF THE SAME WORK.
