A reference book no professional herbalist can be without

As an avid reader (and writer) of books on herbal medicine, I have to say that Blumenthal, Goldberg, and Brinckmann's Herbal Medicine is simply the most authoritative reference for the use of Western herbs on the market today. Herbal Medicine--Expanded Commission E Monographs augments the "gold standard" of scientifically oriented herbal therapy, the Commission E Monographs, with histories, in-depth and comprehensive discussions of scientific research, color photos, and practical recommendations for the use of herbs in therapy, some of which are to be found in no other book. While the tone of the book is academic and the scientific complexity of the subject matter may scare away some potential readers, anyone who uses any of the herbs most commonly available in the USA today can profit by referring to this book.

Illustrated in color throughout, each herb is provided with its basic descriptive information including both popular and botanical name, and it's own bibliography for those seeking further and even more detailed information on medical applications. Herbal Medicine is a core volume for any serious personal or professional, mainstream or alternative, medical resource collection.

Missing extremely important information

I am a clinical professor in a school of pharmacy and am admittedly biased toward traditional "western" medicine. However, any objective person would have to agree that there are major "gaps" in the information this book provides. In the section on St. John's wort, this book states that there are no known contraindications or drug interactions with St. John's wort. There are in fact serious drug interactions with this product, including anti-rejection drugs (resulting in at least one case of organ rejection in a renal transplant patient) and potentially fatal interactions with other anti-depressants (most importantly MAOIs). This book has extensive information on historical use of herbs, pharmacology and uses... but lacks important safety information. No clinician should use this book as his/her sole source of information on herbal products.

Good survey, but...

This is a very interesting book however, that is not a new book is, which has left me a bit puzzled trying to figure out why it doesn’t do what I thought it would (or should). "Photography Is Magic" is indeed a wide-based survey of work made in the past decade or so, but it is in many ways much more of an edited source or reference book than an original analytical work. Still worthwhile to peruse.

There is minimal text from Cotton, and while the pages are flooded with some trending Contemporary Photographs and Photographers, the book falls short of a good critique on the current state of photography.

A Counter-Culture Classic

I have just finished reading the 1971 counter-culture classic, Another Roadside Attraction, by Tom Robbins. It is a philosophical treatise on life, culture, nature, and religion told in a bemusing and often downright funny manner.

The main characters in this story are Amanda, a young mother and flower child - and a bit of an herbalist, her toddler, little Thor, and her new husband, John Paul Ziller, a professional drummer, artist, and magician. The other two primary characters populating this tale are Plucky Purcell, a drug dealer who accidentally gets entangled with an order of malicious monks and goes on to become a karate instructor to the Swiss Guard at the Vatican, and Marx Marvelous, a scientist who is in hiding from an ex-wife seeking child support.

As the story opens, the Zillers purchase an old restaurant property in the woods north of Seattle where they gradually open a gigantic hot dog stand and a roadside zoo. The zoo, their "roadside attraction," features such such exhibits as a flea circus, a dead tse-tse fly stuck in amber, and a bow-legged chicken that reportedly had once lead 50,000 of his fellow chickens on a march across much of the United States. It does not feature Mon Cul, John Paul Ziller's pet baboon who helps out with household chores and taking care of little Thor. The Zillers are eventually joined in their idyllic hideaway by Marx Marvelous who has heard about them through a mutual friend. Marvelous becomes their employee and confidant.

The tale begins to heat up when an earthquake hits Rome and Vatican City. As parts of the papal city crumble, Plucky Purcell rushes down into the catacombs and tunnels beneath St. Peter's hoping to find some of the Church's gold - which he does - during the post-quake confusion. Plucky also comes across an artifact that is destined to change his life and the lives of his friends at the glorified hot dog stand back in Washington. He enters a secret room where a sarcophagus has toppled over revealing the mummified body of Jesus Christ!

Plucky Purcell, with an able assist from an artist friend in Rome who makes plaster figures of humans, manages to get his find back to the Ziller's hot dog stand and zoo. The issue then becomes what to do with their 2,000-year-old corpse - and how best to do it.

Tom Robbins was himself a student of art and religion, two areas from which he draws deeply for this very fine novel. While much of the premise of his book dabbles in the absurd, his philosophical ponderings are a substantive quest for the meaning of life - or as he terms it, "The meaning of meaning."

Below is an example of how Robbins feels about life, with and without religion. It is in the form of a dream that Marx Marvelous has while spending a night in close proximity to the corpse of Christ. In the dream Jesus is sitting on a rock (and fasting) out in the desert when Tarzan rides up to him on a nanny goat. Tarzan quickly engages Jesus on how religion has impacted life on earth. His words are, in essence, Tom Robbins' genesis of formalized religion.

"In the old days," Tarzan began, "folks were more concrete. I mean they didn't have much truck with abstractions and spiritualism. They knew that when a body decomposed, it made the crops grow. They could see with their own eyes that manure helped the plants along, too. And they didn't need Adelle Davis to figure out that eating plants helped them grow and sustained their own lives. So they picked up that there were connective links between blood and s*** and vegetation. Between animal and vegetable and man. When they sacrificed an animal to the corn crop, it was a concession to the obvious relation between death and fertility. What could be less mystical? Sure, it was hoked up with ceremony, but a little show biz is good for anyone's morale. We were linked to vegetation. Nothing in the vegetable world succumbs. It simply drops away and then returns. Energy is never destroyed. We planted our dead the way we planted our seeds. After a period of rest, the energy of corpse or seed returned in one form or another. From death came more life. We loved the earth because of the joy and good times and peace of mind to be had in loving it. We didn't have to be 'saved' from it. We never plotted escapes to Heaven. We weren't afraid of death because we adhered to nature - and its cycles. In nature we observed that death is an inseparable part of life. It was only when some men - the original tribes of Judah - quit tilling the soil and became alienated from vegetation cycles that they lost faith in the material resurrection of the body. They planted their dead bull or their dead ewe and they didn't notice anything sprout from the grave: no new bull, no new sheep. So they became alarmed, forgot the lesson of vegetation, and in desperation developed the concept of spiritual rebirth."
And so was bent the cycle of life.

Another Roadside Attraction is light, funny, deep, and foreboding. The book is a trip - a trip nearly as epic as the one that Christ took from Rome to Seattle!

a mind boggling tale on multiple levels

While I have read periodic newspaper accounts of the lives of workers in Chinese factories that produce clothing, fashion accessories, sporting goods and electronics for Western and Japanese consumer markets, NONE gets as deep and complex as this book by a Chinese American journalist for the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Chang also weaves her personal family story into her reportage, and Factory Girls chronicles the author's coming to terms with her family legacy and the huge socio-economic and political changes in China over the past 75 years.

As the book reached its final chapters, I was surprised at the author's audacity in letting the serious flaws in contemporary Chinese capitalist culture (Yes, I said capitalist) rise to the surface, alarming this reader. Yes, a new individualism is being born and hopefully will help loosen the shackles of millennia of sexism, patriarchy and groupthink, but the moral moorings needed in this transition have not appeared. People routinely lie about everything, and relationships among young men and women are unstable, fugitive and exploitive. The deep meaning and life orientation that comes with submitting to religious disciplines is absent; instead legions of young people are suckered into pyramid schemes, business scams and empty self-improvement programs -- many of them adapted from American self-help gurus. Quacks and hucksters abound. Life seems transitory and superficial. Markets are laced with bribery and substandard workmanship; regulating bureaucracies are corrupt and ineffective. And we all know of China's manifold copyright violations.

If there is another book on contemporary Chinese society as personal and analytical as Factory Girls, as well as written for a general audience, I am not aware of it. For me, the book is also a cautionary tale against the rising and uncritical free-market "faith" that has come to dominate the Republican Party in the Bush years and beyond. I wonder if China is courting a radical overcorrection of its social dysfunctions in the future -- bringing another set of problems in its wake.

I read Factory Girls via audiobook and it is well-voiced.

The poignant story of an "old-fashioned girl."

I am 18 and have read this book at least 30 times. Its simplicity and reality seem to reach into my soul and I seem to have found a "kindred spirit" in the heroine. No other fictitious character has ever moved me as has Polly, an old-fashioned girl. A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hardwork. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedistal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times. Polly is the most understanding and genuine character I have ever read about. Her love for others and her unwillingness to lower her standards and morals for popularity are an inspiration to people of all ages and prove that nothing is wrong with being "an old fashioned girl."

A book to treasure

I'm 15 and you can call me a little bit old fashioned in my ways. I read an old fashioned girl for the first time when i was 11 and since then ive been reading the book at least 4 times a year.My copy of an old fashioned girl is sacred to me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a girl living in totally different times but who is really similar to us nowadays even is she is a little old fashioned! This book is good for any one of any age anywhere who wants to have someone to admire and someone to look up to. Polly is indeed, the perfect girl. As to Fanny and Tom they make the book livelier and funner to read, you'll never get bored with this book in your reach!

Simple Good Clean fun

Do you ever feel like you are tied up in our times? Worrying too much about cell phones, fashions, and the latest whatevers? This book can set you straight. It gives you a peace of mind and fills you with simple pleasures.

The stories main character, Polly, we meet at the age of 14. She has come to stay with rich friends for a while. THey do everything so differently from she. The family has two daughters. One that is two years older than Polly called Fan, who cares for fashion, balls, and beaus. The author daughter is six and she is fixed onoo having her own way about everything. THe young man in the family Tom is a trouble maker, who no matter how hard he tries can't seem to stay out of trouble very long.

Polly is a gentle, kind, loving, caring, selfless, practical, and sensible girl. SHe becomes a great service to this family, touching each of them in a special way. A Surprisingly Successful “Inept” Emperor

'Although Theodosius II (r. 408-450) is not generally regarded as one of the better Roman emperors, the essays in this work collectively argue that History has been a little hard on him, given that he became sole emperor at age 7. The book consists of an introduction and ten essays by several specialists in the Late Empire. One important point made in Theodosius’ favor is that he did manage to keep his throne, and his head, longer than any other emperor, and in particularly tumultuous times. Initially under the regency of his rather older sister Pulcheria, and later aided by several excellent advisors and commanders, he helped keep the Eastern Empire going, while lending some aid to the beset Western Empire, patronizing learning and the arts, and ordering the codification of the laws, while trying to keep a lid on theological disputes. He even had some success in several wars, albeit that he wisely never took to the field himself. The essays cover all these facets of his reign. In addition, we get a look at his style of rule and some insights about his personality, which seems rather less formal than customary for emperors. There are also useful profiles of his “supporting cast,” notably Pulcheria and Marcian, the soldier who would marry her to succeed Theodosius. This is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in the Late Empire.'

Not so weak after all.

Theodosius II was the longest reigning Eastern Roman Emperor (from 408 to 450 AD). Born in 401 as the only son of Emperor Arcadius and his Frankish-born wife Aelia Eudoxia, he already was proclaimed co-Augustus by his father in January AD 402. In 408, his father died and the seven-year-old boy became Emperor of the Eastern half of the Roman Empire. In 414, Theodosius' older sister Pulcheria was proclaimed Augusta and assumed the regency. By 416 Theodosius was declared Augustus in his own right and the regency ended, but his sister remained a strong influence on him.
For the next forty-two years (408– 450), Theodosius was largely confined to Constantinople: he never saw most of the empire over which he ruled; he never fought on campaign; he never commanded troops in the field. The claim of a significant weakening in imperial authority is sharpened by comparison between Theodosius II and his imperial grandfather, Theodosius I.
Contemprary and modern scholars consider him as a monarch pushed around by his eldest sister, the Empress Pulcheria, who as a teenager publicly proclaimed her perpetual virginity. Even contemporaries were struck by the piety of the imperial court, which was said to resemble a monastery, Theodosius and his three sisters rising early each morning to pray together and fasting twice a week.
In 425, Theodosius founded the University of Constantinople and in 429, he appointed a commission to collect all of the laws since the reign of Constantine I, published as the Codex Theodosianus in 438. This law code formed a basis for the law code of Emperor Justinian I, the Corpus Juris Civilis, in the following century.
Being a deep religious emperor, Theodosius II had to deal with a significant theological dispute. In 428 Theodosius appointed the monk Nestorius as Archbishop of Constantinople since 428. Nestorius quickly became involved in the disputes of two theological factions, which differed in their Christology. Nestorius tried to find a middle ground between those who, emphasizing the fact that in Christ God had been born as a man, insisted on calling the Virgin Mary - Theotokos ("birth-giver of God"), and those who rejected that title because God, as an eternal being, could not have been born. Nestorius suggested the title Christotokos ("birth-giver of Christ") as a compromise, but it did not find acceptance with either faction. He was accused of separating Christ's divine and human natures, resulting in "two Christs", a heresy later called Nestorianism. Though initially supported by the emperor, Nestorius found a forceful opponent in Archbishop Cyril of Alexandria.
In 431 the emperor called a council, which convened in Ephesus. The story of the first Council of Ephesus is conventionally told as one of a contest between two main protagonists: the bishops of Alexandria and Constantinople, Cyril and Nestorius. The council affirmed the Nicene Creed (325) and the title Theotokos ("Birth-giver to God", "God-bearer", "Mother of God”) and condemned Nestorius, who returned to his monastery in Syria and was eventually exiled to a remote monastery in Egypt.
Almost twenty years later, the theological dispute broke out again. Another Council was convoked in Ephesus in 449, later deemed a "robber synod" by Pope Leo I because of its tumultuous circumstances. Leo of Rome and many other bishops protested against the outcome, but the emperor supported it. Only after his death in 451 would the decisions be reversed at the Council of Chalcedon.
Theodosius II’s reign was also framed by literary giants. The closing decades of the fourth century saw the deaths of two: Libanius (314– c. 393) and Gregory of Nazianzus (329– 389), the former based in Antioch, staunchly pagan and allied to the Hellenic tradition of the schools, a teacher, practicing orator and voluminous letter-writer, Gregory an equally prolific Christian Hellenist, educated at Athens, briefly bishop of Constantinople before retiring to his native Cappadocia.
In conclusion we can say that the authors of this book point out that - although often dismissed as mediocre and ineffectual – Theodosius II ruled an empire - aided by several excellent advisors and commanders –, which retained its vitality and integrity while the West was broken up by barbarian invasions. The ecclesiastical, legislative, literary and cultural vitality of his reign was impressive and he left a strong, although religious divided, Eastern Roman Empire for his successors.
