In my opinion the whole "The Labyrinths of Echo" is a series which you will love or hate.
...personally I like it.

I wouldn't suggest to start straight with this one.

About the Author
Dr. Paul Richer (1849-1933), a distinguished artist and scientist, was a professor of creative anatomy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a member of the city's Institute of Medicine.


Robern Beverly Hale (1901-1985), who ended his career as curator emeritus of American painting and sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, was an instructor of anatomy at the Art Students League for 40 years. His famous lectures, illustrated with life-size drawings that he created on the spot, have been compiled and edited by Terence Coyle and published in Master Class in Figure Drawing. Hale's other books include Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters.

a classic for serious figurative sculptors

This book was used as one of two texts in my art school figure study class included in our school portfolio of supplies. It is also a text used in an ecorche course at another art school.

My highest recommendation, is to study this book, along with Frank Netter's medical anatomy book focusing on the osteology and myology sections that apply to artists, leaving behind the details that do not apply to artists. The illustrations in that book are second to none. Also, as many other good artistic anatomy books you can find, as the more you understand, the better.

Lastly, get a good poseable medical skeleton. Yes, save up for it, like I did. It is absolutely essential. A realistic sculptor of the human figure must know the body from the inside out. Pictures alone in books are not enough. You must see the structure of the body in the round.

Then I reccommend getting Bruno Lucchesi's "Modelling the Figure in Clay, A Sculptors Guide to Anatomy". Do the exercises using this book , your skeleton as a model, putting on the bones and muscles, one by one. This is a spectacular learning experience to build your own ecorche (flayed) figure.

This book not only works as a brilliant guideline for writing fiction, but also serves as a template for tightening and polishing stories so as to make them work on both entertainment and literary levels. A Journey Worth Taking

Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey" is an open corridor to superb characterization. In preparing to write either your novel or screenplay, Vogler's vivid descriptions of the most common archetypes are truly indispensable and useful. Every fiction writer owes it to him or herself to be mindful of the qualities that each archetype possesses. My mind has been opened by studying the different characteristics of the Hero, the Shadow, the Mentor, the Threshold Guardian, the Herald, the Shapeshifter and the Trickster. Vogler describes each one's dramatic function as well as their psychological function. After teaching us the merits and peculiarity of the character, Vogler exhibits his own unique dramatization of Joseph Campbell's work. The Writer's Journey gives the writer a chance to develop a story to its fullest potential. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have started to employ its direction in my own fiction writing. It will not only change the way we view our characters' and their prospective journeys but it will also help us to see some of their characteristics in our own lives. This is a great book. For someone just entering the stone trade, or for an interested observer, Hill and David [Practical Stone Masonry] is probably the best starting point. However, it makes no attempt to compete with Warland for breadth of geometrical content, and the latter's status as the bible of the trade remains unchallenged. It is good to have it available once more in hardback form. Edmund George Warland was Chief Lecturer on Masonry and Geometry for Masons at the London County Council School of Building in Brixton (founded in 1904 and now part of London South Bank University). From 1928 onward, he was an active member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, particularly during the 1930s, and was for a time Chair of the Institution's Lancashire and Cheshire Branch.

Some thirty years ago as a keen but painfully ignorant apprentice mason, I was advised to 'get hold of a Warland's.' A search of second-hand bookshops eventually yielded a copy and since then I have possessed, or been acquainted with, a number of copies, almost exclusively of the 'dog-eared' or distressed variety. This crisp, pristine, reprint by Donhead therefore looks and feels unfamiliar - no stone dust between the pages or teacup rings on the cover. The content is, however, familiar and Warland's Modern Practical Masonry remains the mason's bible.
