Review
"'My Life Without God' is a lurid insider's tale that helped to shape the conservative movement when it first appeared some 30 years ago. It describes the depravity at the heart of the godless, and how close we came to losing our moral compass as a nation. My thanks to WND for making this book available to a new generation of young Americans so they will not repeat the mistakes of the past," --wrote Kenneth R. Timmerman, author and Republican candidate for Congress from Maryland.
WND CEO Joseph Farah considers Murray's book to be one of the most important conservative books ever published and credits it with being one of the stories that helped shaped his worldview. "Bill Murray's 'My Life Without God' was a seminally important book for me when I first read it in the early 1980s," Farah said. "I was a young journalist drifting further and further from my left-wing and secular worldview. I was horrified by Bill's vivid and no-holds-barred description of his early life in the home of his famous atheist mother. It made me realize the importance of functional families and transcendent values. It's also such a hopeful book because if Bill Murray could overcome that experience and find salvation, indeed any of us can. I put this book up there on my list of conservative classics right next to Whitaker Chambers' 'Witness.'" --Joseph Farah, WND CEO

Great, but needs updating
By zionred
"Take it from someone who was there at the beginning, taking prayer out of school was one of the worst decisions that the U.S. has ever made."
That is the premise of this autobiographical book by William J. Murray, son of the infamous atheist Madelyn Murray O'Hair who successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to take prayer out of the public schools in 1963. If you don't know, William Murray at age 33 accepted Christ into his life. This is his harrowing and very sad story of growing up in a household with "evil personified", as he puts it in one part in his book.
This was a very interesting story. He goes into great detail about the "mommy dearest" relationship that he had with Madelyn and her love affair with socialist and communist causes and her outright hatred for Christianity. As sad and hopeless as the story constantly seems, it has a great ending. Now, an outspoken activist for Christian causes, William Murray has "exercised" his demons and now lives in the glory of Christ.
The only disappointing aspect of the book is that it was written in 1982. As most people know, the saga of Madelyn O'Hair had a very tragic ending. I would like for William to do an updated version of this book and include information regarding the subsequent murder of his mother, brother and his first daughter.

Tales that Need to be Told
By Autumn Rain
I just finished reading this book, and I found it to be an interesting read. Regardless of how old you are, where you live, what you believe about the existence of God, etc.--knowing about Madalyn Murray O'hair is part of knowing a little piece about American history. Her beliefs were framed by movers and shakers of Marxism, Communism, and Atheism, and she--in turn--being vociferous as she was, was a mover and shaker herself all the way up to the Supreme Court. So, her actions have played a role in laying foundations and planting seeds for what is going on today in our society with Atheism. She played a definitive role...for better or for worse, and it is important to know who she was. The America that knew Madalyn knew the "public" Madalyn. William J. Murray gets to offer an important POV from having grown up in the household with this woman. I think it is interesting to get a child's perspective on things. It shows something other than the public persona. You see Madalyn through his eyes and how he perceived his own upbringing under her care as his mother. He does weave numerous details into his adventures, particularly in the events of his late teens and twenties. It is difficult to keep track of, but it connects the dots in between events related to Marilyn and shows why he did many of the things that he did--much of which is because of Madalyn doing the things that SHE did. There is a lot of moving from state to state and job to job, which shows his lack of rootedness. This may or may not be tied into how he was brought up. But, for me personally, I did get a sense of instability in the home life paving the way for all of this bouncing around. Writing this book may have been therapeutic and cathartic for Murray, and I don't blame him for getting his story out in writing. Also, it is a book that may be helpful to others who are raised in dysfunctional homes of various kinds.
