Wash, Rinse, Repeat
By mjweir
First let me confess, I was a fan of the that detective from St. Louis who had a vampire lover and werewolf lover she could never quite decide between--that is until the entire thing went so wildly off the rails no one could ever read it again.
So I was very delighted to find Lexi Blake and her Thieves books. Zoey wasn't pathologically afraid of sex or vampires so we were off to a good start, already. I really liked the first, second and third books. They were a fun romp for anyone that reads this genre. They weren't so dark and uptight I had to drink while I was reading them and the characters were all more or less likeable. They had flaws but they were reasonable flaws. There was no sensation the author was exorcizing her personal life in her writing. Just a good story.
Now we're onto book four and unfortunately, we're getting into Zoey-land, where everything in the world revolves around what Zoey wants, what Zoey thinks and what Zoey does. And Zoey does not (or hasn't yet) evolved or ironically given me any reason whatsoever to understand why she's such catnip to well... everyone. Much like that other famous St. Louis detective, it's as if her mere existence gives her magical karma that enchants everyone she encounters.
Zoey is just as self-centered and selfish as she was in the very first book. What is happening to her never effects her because someone else always pays for it. This bugs me. And I'm finding it more and more difficult to understand what the most powerful vampire in a thousand years and a Prince of Fae who shares his body with a god, see in her. Because I don't like her and I'm not even subject to her whims.
As of this review the fifth book is out. I will finish what has been written but I doubt I'll go back to them unless something significant happens in that book to focus on why these people remain in this relationship and to evolve their characters a bit. I want to see the things that happen to them change them. The life altering event in this book whose balm should have been held out for at least the next book, could have had a very interesting impact on the characters and their relationship, but it was cleared up and swept away almost as soon as it happened. Opportunity wasted. I so wanted to see how Dev reacted and what it meant to him. What a brilliant opportunity to add some depth to a somewhat superficial personality.
I realize this is genre writing but I have to ask: If there is nothing new to bring to the table why write it? I had high hopes when I started with this. The writing was good and the story was interesting. Give Zoey flaws by all means but don't make them stereotypical "female" flaws like being a back seat driver or a weakness for shoes or stubborn irrational stupidity that nearly gets the men around her killed, unless this is supposed to be Jersey Shore meets Anita Blake. In that case, as of book 4, you've got it knicked.

The Sexy Trio is BACK!!!
By Shayna Renee's Spicy Reads
Steal the Sun is book 4 in Lexi Blake’s fantastic Thieves Series. Each book in the series is great and so well done in their own right, but this MUST be read in order. I know you will get excited when you see the name LEXI BLAKE or when you put your eyes on this magnificent book cover, but trust me on this, and start with book 1, Steal the Light. You will instantly be transported to a magical world full of splendor and intrigue and you will never want to leave.
When I started reading Romance novels, I was big into the Urban Fantasy genre, reading books by the great Karen Marie Moning, with her Fever Series. A great friend introduced them to me, and I was hooked at the very beginning, and they were all I could talk about. I slowly started reading other genres, but it was hard to find another great UF series that I could get in to. I’ve known Lexi Blake for her ridiculously good Masters and Mercenaries series, and when I heard about this Thieves Series she was starting, I got really EXCITED and HOPEFUL about it. Lexi has a way of creating characters that become latched on to your heart and buries themselves in the depths of your mind, so even if you aren’t reading her books, you are thinking about the characters, or comparing other heroes to HER heroes. This is crucial when you are writing a fantasy series like Thieves. There are usually so many characters: good guys, bad guys, secondary characters that you need to keep track of; if you don’t feel a connection with the lot of them, I think the stories fall through and people lose interest quickly. The skill that Lexi possesses is perfect for this genre, and that is why I can compare her to the greats like Karen Marie Moning.
Because I absolutely love this series, going into Steal the Sun, I had certain hopes for the characters. I can be a little impatient when it comes to this kind of stuff, so I think I set the bar very high when I go into the next book in a series. Let me tell you, Lexi Blake delivered in this book! I got most of what I wanted out of the main characters I have grown to love (Zoey, Danny, and Dev). I keep telling myself the author CANNOT rush certain circumstances in a book, but there was one particular scene in Steal the Sun that had me grinning from ear to ear, and I was giddy like a freakin’ school girl. It was one of the sexiest scenes I have read in a while, and it didn’t even involve a lot of sex. I’m smiling right now, thinking about it again. Hopefully, it was just a little taste of more to come from these wonderful characters.
People, we are NOT in Dallas anymore! Faery is the place where your wildest dreams or your worst nightmares can come true. Zoey, Daniel, and Devinshea are together and in a great place, but you know the drill…..s*** hits the fan pretty quickly. We are thrust in to a world where one event could end up starting a war of epic proportions, and knowing Zoey, this could totally end up ruining her day and ****ing her off. And when Zoey Donovan-Quinn is ****ed off, guns and knives get thrown in to the mix, and her husbands become very territorial. This book takes a dark turn, and Zoey, Dev, and Danny’s relationship is tested once again.
So with Steal the Sun, you get some SEXY, you get some DARK, you get some HEAVY EMOTION, and we can’t forget the COMICAL! Z, Dev, and Danny could be in the middle of battle, and they would still fire off crazy quips at each other. They certainly know how to shine a light on the heaviness of certain events. I have to say that Declan, Dev’s irritating brother, and Neil, the sarcastic gay werewolf stole the show for me in this book. The s*** that comes out of their mouths had me laughing my *** off. It was just brilliant.
Broken relationships started to mend which made my heart warm, but we are reminded of the enemies that are back home and the challenges that these characters still have to face. The crew is stronger than ever, and characters like Lee, Felix, Zack, Neil, and Sarah keep digging their way into my heart, and making me want more of them. I’m excited for the new characters that are popping up and the strike of recognition that their names mean to me. I can’t wait to continue this very naughty fairytale, and will count down the days until I get me some more DEVINSHEA!
