Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil: A Comprehensive Introduction, by Bryan Frances

Suffering that is not coupled with any redeeming good is one of our world’s more troubling, apparent glitches. It is particularly vexing for any theist who believes that the world was created by a supremely morally good, knowledgeable, and powerful god. Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil: A Comprehensive Introduction is among the first book-length discussions of theistic approaches to this issue. Bryan Frances’s lucid and jargon-free analyses of a variety of possible responses to the problem of gratuitous suffering will provide serious students or general readers much material with which to begin an extended contemplation of this ancient and contemporary concern.

The perfect size and scope for an introductory philosophy class’s discussion of the problem of evil and suffering, and deliberately crafted to be approachable by all interested readers, Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil is philosophy doing what it does best: serious, engaged, rigorous explorations of even the darkest truths.

The book offers many useful pedagogical features, including chapter overviews and summaries, annotated suggested readings, and eight-eight discussion questions.

Review

In a field filled with atheistic rants and rash theistic rejoinders this book is a breath of fresh air. I know of no other book that offers such a clear, entertaining, and levelheaded guide to thinking about the problem of evil. The arguments are clear, Frances's presentation is engaging, and the key issues are handled in a thorough and careful manner. It will be a valuable text for classes in the philosophy of religion, and will reward reading by anyone interested in these issues.

Gratuitous Suffering Implies God Does not Exist
By Searching the Stars
Bryan Frances’s Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil argues that, considering the vast amount of human and animal suffering, it is highly unlikely that God exists.

In other words, this book deals with the problem of theodicy, which is justifying the goodness and power of God in face of evil and suffering. This is a standard problem in philosophy of religion. He argues for an atheistic position in this book. That’s fine, just as long as readers know that is his position.

There are some interesting arguments and analogies in the text. You get the sense of an actively thinking philosopher, but one who is often flippant about religious positions. Overall, I thought John Hick’s, Evil and the God of Love was a much better example of a philosopher/theologian at work, and not merely because he comes to a different conclusion.

The style of philosophical writing in Frances’s book is very casual (with the use of lots of slang) and without reference to other scholars. He defends that early on, but it frequently left me without a sense of the positions he was arguing against. There’s simply no reference to the large amount of work by others on this topic.

Additionally, Frances writes by setting up acronyms and his own names for ideas. Thus, the “4-Part conception” of God is used to refer to a theological position he defines on page 18. You have to remember this. Why didn’t he just use “the God of classical theism?” That’s a standard phrase in theology that many people are familiar with. You’ll also have to know what PHOG is.

On page 122, he arrives at the Free Will Defense, historically one of the best of the theodicies. But his first argument here is to argue that determinism means, “it’s not certain that we have free will.” I am not certain there are many scientists or theologians, who in our post-Quantum Mechanics world, believe in hard determinism as a general metaphysical position without major reservations.

I would have liked a more detailed response to Hick’s and Plantinga’s ideas, the position of several process theologians and modern adaptations of the free will defense.
