AN EXCELLENT EVANGELICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT

Ian Howard Marshall (born 1934) is Professor Emeritus of New Testament Exegesis at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland; he has written many other books, such as New Testament Theology, The Origins of New Testament Christology, etc. He wrote in the Foreword of this 1977 book, "The problem of the historical Jesus is one of the most important themes in New Testament scholarship. The present volume is an attempt to survey modern discussion of the problem, to delineate its most significant aspects, and to attempt a careful appraisal of it. Although I have tried to write for as wide an audience as possible... I have tried to keep in mind the needs of the student and to tackle the problem as rigorously as possible." (Pg. 9)
He says, "[D.M.] Baillie ... insisted that the Christian concept of God demands that we frame a christology, i.e., a doctrine of who Jesus is in relation to God. For the Christian understanding of God, according to Baillie, is of a God who reveals himself and acts in history. The God whom Jesus spoke of is a God who seeks out and saves man. But if Jesus is merely the teacher ABOUT God then the message is false. The concept of a God who seeks and saves demands expression in the incarnation, in God coming among men in some tangible way, otherwise God remains remote and unknowable." (Pg. 71)
He argues, "The case against Matthaean authorship [of the gospel] reduces to two points. First, if the Gospel was written by one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, it is hard to understand why its author incorporated in his account nearly the whole of the Gospel of Mark which was not written by an eye-witness... The second argument ... is that the interpretation of Papias's statement is uncertain. He does not say (in effect) that the Gospel according to Matthew was in fact written by Matthew, but rather that Matthew compiled the 'logia,' and it is an open question what he meant by this word... The conclusion is that it is unlikely that the Gospel of Matthew was compiled by Matthew but that there is reasonable evidence that Matthew did compile some record of the traditions about Jesus, which has been incorporated in the Gospel." (Pg. 149-150)
He observes about the fourth gospel, "the Gospel professes to have been composed by a 'beloved disciple,' and no identification of this anonymous figure is so probable as that John the apostle is meant by this designation... [But] The Revelation is also ascribed to John the apostle, and it is difficult to believe that one mind produced both works, so different in language and character. These facts lead most scholars to conclude that John could not have been the author of this Gospel. However, the weight of the evidence for some connection between John and the Gospel is so strong that many scholars feel unable to deny that John had something to do with the Gospel... On the whole, therefore, it is improbable (although not impossible) that John himself wrote the Gospel, but very probable that his influence lay behind it... We are thus left with two Gospels which were probably written by the men whose names they bear and two which remain anonymous." (Pg. 150-151)
Although more than thirty-five years old, Marshall's arguments remain generally sound, and this book remains an excellent introduction to "historical Jesus" study for Christians (although they should probably supplement this book with a more recent one, such as The Jesus Quest: The Third Search for the Jew of Nazareth).

Buy Something Else from Marshall

I. Howard Marshall is a leading New Testament scholar who is especially well known for his works on Luke-Acts, including Luke: Theologian and Historian and his commentary on The Acts of the Apostles.
This book was written in 1972 and is a response to some rather unsophisticated articulations of the Jesus Myth, including the early work of G.A. Wells.
In the introduction, Marshall cogently describes the state of the question by pointing out that in the mid-20th century, one of the few "authorities" to consider Jesus as a myth was a Soviet Encyclopedia. He then discusses the then recent work of G.A. Wells, who he finds to be imminently unpersuasive.
Wells proves to be prophetic in his statement that Wells' articulation of the Jesus Myth was unlikely to gain many adherents, especially among scholarly circles. Though writing more than 30 years ago, Marshall was correct that Wells' impact on the scholarly community would be nil. Wells has convinced no one of importance.
Nevertheless, Marshall's own treatment of the question is somewhat unfocused and dated. Despite its title he does not focus exclusively on the Jesus Myth. Nor does he interact with the more recent efforts of commentators such as Earl Doherty (simply by virtue of having written more than 30 years ago).
Though I highly recommend all of Marshall's writings on Luke-Acts, readers would probably be better served by obtaining more recent discussions of these issues.

Still relevant after all these years

Marshall's book was originally published in the U. S. by Eerdmans in 1977 as part of the "I Believe . . ." series. I read it in 1980, and just finished rereading it (2010) after 30 years. I've read a number of more recent books touching on the same issues. Marshall's treatment of issues surrounding the historical Jesus is still relevant today after all that time. Of course, there is no interaction with more recent treatments, but many of the foundational issues he raises and addresses will equip readers to critically interact with many of the more recent treatments of the "historical Jesus'" that have cropped up in in the last 30 years. In fact, many of the recent skeptical treatments of Jesus by the Jesus Seminar in the 1980s/1990s and others seem to have ignored the logical, historical, and philosophical problems with the methods, assumptions, and conclusions they espouse. Marshall covers all of this and stands as a "before-the-fact" corrective to some of the treatments of the historical Jesus since he wrote. So, yes, this is as relevant today as it was 33 years ago, but you won't be spoon-fed through an analysis of recent treatments, but you will get from Marshall the knowledge you need to read recent treatments intelligently.
I'm not going to repeat the review of the content posted by the reviewer from October 25, 2009, who did a good summary. However, I do want to reinforce that this book is still a good read and filled with helpful information to assist any reader to steer clear of the mistakes made by skeptical scholars on the one hand, and by the uncritical reader of the gospels on the other.
