About the Author
With a doctorate in biochemistry, Arlen Thomason built a career as a molecular biologist in biomedical research. Arlen provided photographs for Jeff Morgan's book Productive Trout Flies for Unorthodox Prey: The Oddballs, and his photos have appeared in fly-fishing magazines and web sites. He lives in Walterville along Oregon's McKenzie River.

Good pictures, dense text

You may have read previous reviews of this book, which are all exceptionally positive. I have a more critical take, and I will tell you more about what's in the book, having purchased my own copy.
Knowing that many of our members are primarily still water anglers, I would point out that this book has a moving water emphasis, as it is based largely on the author's experience on the McKenzie River in Oregon. There is only one chapter on still water insects and it is useful, but not comprehensive. It covers Callibaetis mayflies, midges (too superficially for the devoted chironomid fisher), dragons and damsels, aquatic beetles, boatmen and backswimmers. There is nothing on still water caddis, a serious omission, and nothing on leeches (which are not insects, but important trout food in lakes). His pictures and discussion of dragons and damsels is the most useful. For example, he distinguishes between the dragon fly species, pointing out that the Aeshnid species is the most active and therefore the most important trout food (pp. 120-121). They have a more slender body than the Skimmer species, and our patterns should take that into account. Also, the picture of a damselfly nymph (p. 125) might drastically change how you tie the imitation, and his description of their behavior should change how you fish the pattern. In this chapter, as in others throughout the book, there is limited attention to fly patterns. However, of the 6 patterns at the end of the chapter, the Callibaetis emerger and the damsel nymph deserve consideration.
Overall, the book focuses more on "bugs" than it does on fishing, giving limited attention to fly patterns and fishing tactics. The book's strongest contribution is its pictures, which have no equal in any other book I have seen. (Other reviewers agree on this.) There are amazing pictures of the stages of metamorphosis of mayflies and stoneflies, and of the changing appearance of a mayfly dun as it drifts toward and into a trout's "window" of vision. The latter pictures confirm what LaFontaine has written ("The Dry Fly: New Angles"), that trout see the tops of the insect's wings first, and support his suggestion that a dry fly will be more effective if the wings are exaggerated. Nevertheless, the book would be far more valuable if the author had given more attention to the implications of his pictures to various theories of imitation, such as LaFontaine's. Instead, he devotes far too much space to (an often) tedious academic discussion of insect classification.
It is apparent Thomason has become totally fascinated with aquatic insects per se, a fascination that most of us will not share to the same degree. For example, what are we to make of the fact that a caddisfly larva's case is open at both ends, allowing the larva to "pump" water in through the front of the case and out through the rear? An interesting observation in itself, but one for which I fail to see an application. Most of the book's text is of this nature, but not all. Roughly 10 percent of the text is of real utility, but the reader has to wade through an awful lot of text book entomology to glean that 10 percent with the result that most readers will lose patience with the text and barely skim it, thereby missing the useful information that is buried there.
And that's unfortunate. You're likely to miss, for example, that PMDs seem to have the most trouble of all mayflies in escaping the nymphal shuck (p. 39), which reveals that a PMD hatch will leave a lot of cripples struggling on the surface. The implication is clear: when PMDs are hatching be prepared with cripple patterns. (The same is true to a lesser extent for Callibaetis hatches on lakes.)
Despite my criticisms I still recommend the book as a unique contribution to the fly fishing literature, mostly for it outstanding pictures. It is not a book to be read once and put away. I will take it out before every important trip and review relevant chapters, and keep it by my tying table. (You can get the book for about $25 online; it was out of stock at the local fly shops when I checked in early December.)

Perfection

This book is monumental in its approach to fly fishing. Having an inside look at the creatures that we imitate and knowing their life cycle better will help immensely in my ability to know what to fish and how to fish. The pictures are amazing and very helpful in tying my own flies to imitate bugs that I have not had the opportunity to see and touch in real life. I highly recommend this book.

Beautiful hard cover comprehensive book with incredible photography. The subject is presented in a unique fashion as it is written from both an entomology AND the fly fishing aspect. The book has retained a permanent place on my shelf.
